The 2012 graduates of Textile Crafts BA(Hons) @ University of Huddersfield present: SAMPLE12!

Monday 20 February 2012

Joby Lawlor - Term 1 work

Joby's past project investigated the concept of secrets and lies. Using different weights of yarns and monofilaments she created double-cloth loom weaves of varying densities, which represented the ability of a lie to either fully cloud the truth or only somewhat hide it.

Gina Scholes - Term 1 work

Over the course of the last term Gina developed a series of characters for use in children's books. By utilising weave, embroidery and wrapping techniques she produced a range of doll parts which will be further developed this term.

Elisa Etemad - Term 1 work

Last term Elisa investigated her Iranian heritage by combining both Farsi characters with English text to create an interesting juxtaposition - recognising her dual nationality. Using weave and braiding to create forms, Elisa produced a collection of samples intended for wearable jewelry pieces.

Sian Louise Mason- Term 1 work.

Sian's last project explored typography through the medium of stitch. Using body movements, she invented a conceptual 'alphabet' of shapes which were then applied to hand-distressed fabrics.

Emily Lorna Blankley - Term 1 work.

Emily's last project looked at historical architecture and furniture for inspiration. Baroque and Rococo motifs were used to produce a range of beautifully embroidered textiles intended for interior use.

Rachael Whittaker - Term 1 work

Last term Rachael utilised a range of avant-garde methods to create samples for a costume for The Shining Guest (a BBC radio play). By interpreting sounds and noises through textiles, she created an exciting and unusual collection.

Steph Roberts - Term 1 work.

Steph's project 'Dye it Yourself' was a campaign encouraging people to eat healthier, locally sourced foods. By using fruit and veg to hand-dye her own textiles, Steph produced a range of fabrics which she then encorporated into craft workshops to help promote her concept.

Leigh Bowser - Term 1 work

Leigh's project 'Being an Identical Twin' explored her experience of growing up as an identical twin. Through the use of stitch she depicted images from her childhood, interpreting the strong connection she has with her sibling.

Heather Walkinshaw - Term 1 work.

Last term Heather's work focussed on migration and crossing boundaries. Using braiding, off the loom weave and dying/print techniques, Heather explores navigating spacial limits and leaving essences or imprints of what were once there.

Sarah Wells - Term 1 work.

Influenced by her son's relocation to university, Sarah's previous project explored absence and presence, negatives and positives. Her final piece made use of her embroidery skills by creating a series of hand-darned fabrics which explored the concept of adding and taking away.

Kate Simmonds - Term 1 work

Kate's previous project 'Beneath the Surface' took influence from the structure of dinosaur bones and fossils. By heavily layering and decontextulising these linear shapes, Kate produced a collection of paper and fabric samples intended for a boutique market.

Michaela Loughran - Term 1 work.

Michaela's last project explored ballet costumes for The Black Swan. Looking at aesthetic techniques based on free movements of birds in flight, Michaela produced a collection of beautiful and vibrant paper and fabric samples.

Julie Nixon - Term 1 work.

Last term Julie investigated dying industries within Britain and produced a collection of work based on her findings. Her samples intend to remind us to buy local and to support our heritage.

Heidi Ward - Term 1 work.

'DIY Couture' involved eccentric use of household and DIY items, combined with Heidi's unique use of off-the-loom weave; which resulted in this exciting collection of Catwalk appropriate jewelry samples.
